Immigration and Our Legal System

We've heard the debate numerous times on the television. Political pundits harp on the inadequacies our immigration system, citing various negative effects that it has on patriotism, the economy, crime, and social welfare. But who is really to blame for the negative aspect of society? Is it possible that using strangers as a scapegoat to bare the brunt of our problems is easier than facing them?

Most of us who have strong opinions on the topic haven't experienced the trial and tribulations of a society in peril. We don't know what it is like to be hungry; truly hungry and not know where your next meal is going to come from. In the country of opportunity, where every man starts essentially on the same playing field, and will rise up the social economic ladder, so long as he wants the success bad enough, we don't know what it is like to go for days without food or water, stand in line for days just to fill out a job application, or understand that every single day that we step out into the public is another chance that I take on my life. We don't face these ever-present worries.

For those of us in the world who have not grown up in a fully developed country, there is certainly a certain excitement about what the west and other developed nations have to offer. If you have an opportunity to live in America or Europe, you would probably jump at the opportunity because half of your family is probably starving while the other half is dying of preventable disease.

You believe that if you work hard, save money and create a sustainable life for yourself, you can either escape the horrors of home or eventually go back and try to help the situation. The contention that perhaps people who come over to the United States illegally are the source of our problems is simple rash. On will find unemployment, drugs, violence and other problematic issues no matter where on earth he is.

There needs to be a new paradigm in place; one that supports the honest, hardworking, dream/vision-driven immigrant who contributes constructively to our society. This proposed restructuring of the system would take lots of time, but would be helpful the US economy over time. It will take all of our efforts though, once we can commit.
